Psychiatric Services

Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health concerns through a biological approach. Providers can include Psychiatrists (M.D. or D.O.), licensed and board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP), and Physician Assistants (P.A.).

Our psychiatric providers take a holistic approach to treatment by examining sleep hygiene, nutrition and vitamins, physical activity, and recommend therapy. They may refer you for blood testing and genetic testing as they consider psychiatric medications. They will provide education to the you and your family about the treatment plan and any medications you may be prescribed. Additionally, they work collaboratively with other providers involved in your care, including your therapist and medical doctors.

Our psychiatric providers are frequently studying what is new in the field to grow their skills and be the best clinician they can be for you.

  • A Psychologist attends graduate school (Ph.D. or Psy.D.). They focus on therapy and diving deeper into the root cause and treatment of mental health concerns.

A Psychiatrist attends medical school (M.D. or D.O.). They focus no the biological reasons for mental health concerns and can prescribe medications.

These professions compliment each other and work collaboratively to help you experience symptom reduction and improve your ability to cope.

  • The main difference between these providers is the route they took to be able to treat mental health concerns.

Psychiatrists attend medical school and complete residency and fellowship in psychiatric medicine. They can work independently.

PMHNP are registered nurses who completed a master's or Doctoral degree in nursing and are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses who specialize in psychiatry. They collaborate with psychiatrists for more difficult cases.

PAs attend physician assistant school. They do not specialize in psychiatry per se, but can attain additional clinical experience in psychiatric care. They have a direct oversight relationship with a psyschiatrist.

  • In the first session, our psychiatric providers will gather medical and mental health information, assess your symptoms, and inquire about family history. They may recommend additional labs to further assess what’s going on with your body.

They will work collaboratively with you to establish a treatment plan which may include referrals to other providers or prescribing medications.

They will schedule a follow-up visit to review your progress on your treatment plan.

  • Pharmacogenomic testing is a ground-breaking, researched tool to help with medication management. Genetic Psychotropic tests will offer clues about how your body responds to medications. Since each person metabolizes medications differently, these results will help your providers make better choices in medications to prescribe.

The intention to using the Psychotropic tests is to reduce negative side effects and reduce symptoms without the standard trial and error approach to medication selection.

  • Medications is not a choice for everyone. Evidence-based treatment is a combination of psychotherapy and short-term medication use is the most effective form of treatment. Talk to your provider to decide which is best for you as some of these may not be suitable for your condition.
